CloudBees Announces Fall Release Containing New Innovations for Its Application Lifecycle in the Cloud Platform

New Features Accelerate Adoption and Extend Platform for Production-ready Java™ Enterprise Applications

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. -- JavaOne 2011 -- October 4, 2011 -- CloudBees, Inc. , the Java Platform as a Service (PaaS) innovation leader, today announced its 2011 Fall Release. The release contains enhancements and new features within the CloudBees' PaaS for Java that span the entire application development lifecycle. The focus of the release was two-fold: to accelerate the platform's adoption by Java developers through ease-of-use enhancements, and to offer more robust support for sophisticated, production-ready enterprise web applications.

The latest release of CloudBees' industry-leading PaaS addresses the most important business imperative for application development and deployment: agility. It provides new features that simplify the full Java application lifecycle in the cloud, allowing businesses to get products to market faster and letting Java developers focus on building the sophisticated, production-ready applications that help businesses succeed.

Significant platform enhancements include the following:

Accelerating Adoption:

The usability enhancements in the release make the CloudBees platform easier than ever to use and provide a simple path to PaaS application development and deployment. The most significant usability enhancements have to do with continuous deployment. Turnkey continuous deployment is now possible with a click to kick off builds and regression tests, and automatic deployment if release criteria are met.

  • Turnkey, Continuous Deployment - CloudBees has simplified the process of implementing continuous deployment on its platform. Using CloudBees repositories in the Forge, builds kick off as soon as a commit is made, without further configuration. Applications can be deployed to RUN@cloud simply by clicking a checkbox and entering the application ID. A command line SDK is provided that automatically configures this functionality.

  • GIT Improvements - It's easier than ever to connect CloudBees and GitHub-based repositories to Jenkins builds. New GitHub post-commit hooks also make it much easier to build GitHub projects with the CloudBees Jenkins service. In addition, CloudBees-hosted Git repositories now send email notifications when commits are made to Git or SVN repositories.

  • Simplified, Dev-to-Deploy on CloudBees - Integration between Jenkins and other CloudBees services like Forge and RUN@cloud have been improved to simplify setup. The CloudBees Wiki provides new articles and tutorials about the platform to help developers get started with building and deploying applications in the cloud.

  • Jenkins Upgrades - Several improvements and upgrades have been made to the Jenkins instance in DEV@cloud, including moving to the latest stable release (v. 1.409.1), support for JDK 7 and several Nectar plugins. For example, the Nectar Folders plugin lets you group your jobs into folders, making it even easier to organize and define who can do what with them.

  • Improved Support for Grails - RUN@cloud and DEV@cloud now have better support for Grails to build and run Grails applications on the CloudBees platform.

  • Improved CloudBees Interface and documentation - To help accelerate adoption, the CloudBees platform has improved documentation and an enhanced user interface that provides a more integrated look and feel across all CloudBees services.

Extending to the Enterprise:

The enterprise enhancements offer new functionality to support production-ready, Java enterprise web applications.

  • Support for the Java EE 6 Web Profile Specification - An integrated JBoss AS 7 application container allows customers to deploy production-ready Java EE 6 Web applications. Enterprises can now leverage a wide range of new APIs, including: Servlet 3.0, JSF 2.0, CDI 1.0, EJB 3.1 (Lite), JPA 2.0 and JAX-RS 1.1.

  • New Features for Enterprise Applications -The new Session Store and Dedicated Routing features provide production-quality availability and security for applications running on Tomcat or JBoss AS 7. This release also provides a dramatic reduction in the time required to upload applications, which makes application deployment even faster.

  • New, Role-based Access Control (RBAC) - Role-based Access Control authorizes developers, based on their role, to initiate, manage and view jobs. Some developers may be able to view and/or manage all jobs, while others may only be able to view and manage their own project. Administrators can delegate authority to others, further reducing overhead and improving security in large organizations.

  • Eclipse Tools - Customers can now enhance their Eclipse IDE by downloading the CloudBees Toolkit for Eclipse plugin. The plugin allows Eclipse users to add features for managing their CloudBees account, including Jenkins jobs and RUN@cloud applications. The CloudBees Toolkit for Eclipse plugin adds CloudBees project wizards, build and deploy commands and views for Jenkins and RUN@cloud to Eclipse installations.

Focused exclusively on Java developers and applications, CloudBees offers the first PaaS that allows companies to build, test and deploy applications in the cloud without limitations or unnecessary infrastructure costs. Unlike other PaaS providers that deliver a thin set of capabilities across multiple programming languages, CloudBees solves the complex problems required to get enterprise Java applications running quickly and reliably in the cloud.

"This update is our most aggressive yet in terms of making our PaaS for Java applications easier than ever for developers to use, and to feel secure in bringing their companies' development and runtime environments into the cloud as well," said Steve Harris, senior vice president of products. "All of these improvements are designed to accelerate adoption for companies of all sizes, and extend the platform's reach into the largest, most demanding production environments."

CloudBees offers the only develop-to-deploy public cloud platform for Java and is currently serving thousands of customers. The CloudBees platform provides everything developers need to quickly and easily develop and deploy Java applications in the cloud -- without having to purchase, configure and maintain hardware, and without having to program applications for a specific underlying Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

About CloudBees
CloudBees (cloudbees.com ) is the only cloud company focused on servicing the complete Java application lifecycle for cloud development and deployment -- without any servers, any virtual machines or any IT staff. The CloudBees platform today includes DEV@cloud, a service that lets developers take their build and test environments to the cloud, and RUN@cloud, which lets teams seamlessly deploy applications to production in the cloud.

CloudBees is also the world's premier expert on Jenkins, the most widely used continuous integration server. The company offers a Jenkins service as part of DEV@cloud, as well as an on-premise enterprise solution, Nectar, which is available as a subscription. Backed by Matrix Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners, CloudBees was founded in 2010 by former JBoss CTO Sacha Labourey and an elite technology team.
