CloudBees Platform Powers ‘Lose It!’ Weight Loss Application, Helping Customers Get In Shape After Holidays

Company Uses the CloudBees PaaS to Handle Up to 25,000 Transactions per Minute and Help Users to Get Fit in the New Year

WOBURN, MA. – January 7, 2012 – CloudBees, Inc. , the Java Platform as a Service (PaaS) innovation leader, today announced that Lose It! has selected the CloudBees Platform to manage its Java application infrastructure for the company’s Lose It! weight-loss app. As crowds of people start executing on New Year’s resolutions to get more fit, Lose It! will scale up its infrastructure to handle tens of thousands of transactions per minute – all with no system administrators.

Using the CloudBees Platform, Lose It! manages as many as 25,000 transactions per minute, from users all over the world. The weight loss application, used by several million people, drives results that have helped the Lose It! user community to lose more than 14,000,000 pounds.

“The early part of each year is one of our busiest times, as people strive to achieve their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. That seasonal spike puts additional load on our application,” said Charles Teague, CEO, Lose It!. “However, with the CloudBees PaaS, we have instant scalability and access to the Java computing resources we need, when we need them. Because we only pay for what we use, we also have much lower infrastructure maintenance costs than we would have if we were maintaining the infrastructure ourselves.

“Off-loading the technical back-end work to CloudBees enables our team members to direct all their efforts towards one objective – developing, deploying and enhancing an innovative application that helps people lose weight. Our developer productivity has increased and our deployment process has been streamlined. Sometimes we deploy multiple times per day and we do this easily, with just a few clicks” said Teague.

CloudBees technology manages the day-to-day application infrastructure for Lose It!’s web, iPhone and Android apps. Some of the benefits Lose It! has experienced in using the CloudBees Platform include:

  • Application deployment in minutes, not weeks;

  • Savings of more than $100,000 per year on infrastructure and related maintenance;

  • 99.9 percent up-time on the equivalent of 25 dedicated servers, with a hardware IT budget of zero; and

  • Ability to focus on core differentiators within the Lose It! application – not on infrastructure maintenance.

“Lose It!’s success deploying in the cloud with CloudBees is a great example of how a small team with limited resources can benefit from the CloudBees Platform,” said Sacha Labourey, CEO, CloudBees. “Using CloudBees, Lose It! is able to handle all of its high-volume Java transactions, including peak times such as the start of the New Year, with instant scalability as needed, all on an application infrastructure they don’t need to maintain. This allows the development team to focus on continually enhancing the user experience – not on maintaining IT infrastructure.”

The CloudBees PaaS allows developers to quickly and easily develop and deploy Java applications to the cloud. The CloudBees Platform provides instant application server and configurable runtime functionality in the cloud, including load balancing, scalability and high availability for web, mobile and Java applications.
