Community Experiencing More Adoption in DevOps Segment, Planning Initiatives to Improve Workflow, Onboarding Experience
LOS ALTOS, Calif. – October 20, 2014 – As it celebrates its tenth anniversary and prepares to kick off its biggest annual user conference to date, the Jenkins Community , the community of developers using the Jenkins CI open source continuous integration (CI) server, today announced that Jenkins continues to grow at an accelerated rate. Whether the number of active Jenkins instances, plugins contributed to the community or attendees at Jenkins user conferences, all have continued to grow by double-digit percentages in 2014.
The Jenkins Community will showcase its ongoing success and provide a variety of informational sessions at the Fourth Annual Bay Area Jenkins User Conference (JUC) on Thursday, October 23, in San Francisco. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport and will feature speakers from organizations such as eBay, Target, Gap and Google. CloudBees is the lead organizer and Platinum sponsor for the event.
Growth in the number of active installations of the Jenkins platform has accelerated in 2014. Active installations reached 95,927 as of September 30, 2014, up 37 percent from September 2013 and more than four times the 22,389 installations registered as of December 31, 2010. There were 18,869 active installations added in the first nine months of 2014 – a 45 percent increase from the 13,045 active installations added in the first nine months of 2013.
Jenkins has become the leader for continuous integration and continuous delivery due to its open and extensible plugin architecture. This extensibility enables Jenkins to orchestrate a software delivery pipeline typically comprised of many different tools. The extensive list of available plugins gives developers and DevOps teams the ability to work with their tools of choice to build, test and deliver software. The number of plugins contributed by the Jenkins community crossed 1,000 in October – marking a 20 percent increase over the 832 available on September 30, 2013, and a 65 percent increase over the total available as of two years ago.

However, equally as important is the active and vibrant community that continues to advance Jenkins functionality.”
Kawaguchi said the user base for Jenkins is expanding beyond leading-edge developers with advanced skills to include development teams in all industries, including conservative ones such as financial services and transportation. Jenkins users, he said, are taking advantage of a wider range of technologies – from Amazon Web Services to Platform as a Service (PaaS), from Chef to Vagrant – to automate processes, creating better quality projects in less time, at lower risk and at a reduced cost.
Development of Jenkins CI – originally created by Kawaguchi in 2004 – is driven by the Jenkins open source community. The community has an ambitious list of initiatives in its sights as it enters its second decade.
Kawaguchi outlined the following initiatives as leading candidates for Jenkins:
Workflow – Providing the most flexible way to let people orchestrate complex activities on Jenkins, for use cases such as continuous delivery pipelines and distributed parallel processing.
An even better onboarding experience – Making it easier for new users to perform simple automatic builds on hosted repositories such as GitHub with as few mouse clicks as possible.
Jenkins managed as code – Helping those using Chef, Puppet or other configuration automation tools to deploy Jenkins and its jobs.
Beyond the growth in plugins and active installations, Jenkins’ increasing popularity is illustrated in the growth in the number of attendees at its user conferences. The upcoming JUC in San Francisco has enrolled 37% more Jenkins users than the conference had in 2013. Counting other Jenkins JUC events in Boston, Berlin and Israel, more than 2,300 Jenkins users will have attended a Jenkins User Conference in 2014.
