Flexibility of CloudBees SDM: Jira Server Integration

Written by: Michael Baldani

You can see from my series of posts related to CloudBees SDM, that we’re building out capabilities that help engineering and DevOps transformation leaders solve the problems associated with managing the end-to-end software delivery across a complex set of teams, tools and processes. We at CloudBees understand that visibility and insight into your development processes is critical to efficiently delivering quality software to the market, but that it shouldn’t come at the expense of developer freedom or an organization’s preference for using some self-managed development tools.

That is where today’s Jira Server integration news comes in. You have heard me say CloudBees SDM is flexible and agnostic so you can leverage the investment already made in your issue tracking tool, as well as your entire toolchain. This means you can embrace, not replace the tools you have, while also future-proofing for any new technology that’ll be added down the road.  Be wary of providers that want to rip and replace with an all-in-one platform.  Not only is it disruptive but being stuck inside a box is restrictive and causes friction with your development teams.

Based on this I want to let you know that CloudBees SDM now has built-in integrations with Jira Server and Jira Data Center (and Jira Cloud). You can continue to use these tools - self-managed or in the cloud - while also leveraging CloudBees SDM for visibility and insights into and across your software delivery process. At the same time you can implement policies to drive governance and best practices resulting in delivering quality software to your customers.

Manage the end-to-end software delivery with ease

Jira Server integration lets you link Jira Server projects to associated products so you can have visibility into all tickets and related data. This integration lets you prioritize more efficiently and track all work related to those projects.

Integration with Jira Server can be done through the Apps capability in CloudBees SDM, and is provided through a CloudBees SDM plugin. After you install the plugin, you can establish a connection between the Jira Server and your CloudBees SDM account. Connect to your CloudBees SDM account by either entering the base Jira Server URL or by manually entering connection parameters.

What you can do with more observability

With the Jira Server integration to CloudBees SDM, you can run queries and access tabular reports to answer specific questions related to issue tracking, such as the number of issues created, issue types (epic, story, bug fix tec.), progress made or blocked tickets, just to name a few.

You can also create dashboards on agile metrics to measure deployment frequency, cycle time, defect, and others across teams.  The widgets can also be organized in a way that makes the most sense to you and other product stakeholders.

The power of feature management with Jira Server integration

When you pair CloudBees SDM and the Jira server integration with the power of our feature management module, you have the ability to truly manage the efficient delivery of features by visualizing issue types, priority, progress, status breakdown, stalled and blocked.

Contributions overview gives you visibility into team members assigned to each issue.

As well as all comments and communications between teams members related to that issue.

Tool integrations and other capabilities of CloudBees SDM are available in the preview program today. We want to give you early access to use the solution while also working directly with our product team for feedback to improve it.
