Organizations of all size are realizing that DevOps and Continuous Delivery help unlock many benefits for their business by streamlining the software production process. Yesterday, I joined Gene Kim, Vincent Thavonekham and Anders Wallgren on our bi-weekly Continuous Discussions (c9d9) video hangout. This time we talked about the benefits of DevOps and Continuous Delivery.

Some highlights from this episode:
We started the episode with 30 minutes of highlights from the 2015 State of DevOps Report , by Puppet Labs and IT Revolution. The report analyzed information from almost 5,000 respondents to help understand the performance of different types of IT organizations across countries, and verticals.
State of the DevOps - IT Performance Metrics Comparison Some of the more interesting findings related to the benefits of DevOps and Continuous Delivery we discussed were that:
- Productivity and release frequency don’t necessarily have to decrease as team size grows. In short, practicing DevOps can help you overcome the “mythical man month.” # of Deployments/day/dev
- There is a big correlation between “deployment pain” and IT performance. The more painful code deployments reportedly are, the poorer the IT performance, organizational performance and culture.
Even after a 30 minute discussion, we only skimmed the surface of the report. There is so much good information in there that I would urge you to go and give the entire report a read after you watch the replay of the episode. For the next 30 minutes we talked through some anecdotal examples of benefits that various folks in FinServ, Retail, Government/Aerospace and Defense, and Embedded teams have realized. Across the board, these benefits included:
- Decreased risk and “lower unit cost” for each software deployment,
- Better developer productivity and less burnout,
- More auditability and compliance,
- Improved overall company performance
Path Diagram To ground these discussions, we gave examples from several talks given at last years DevOps Enterprise Summit (DOES14) from DevOps champions at organizations like Target, Capital One, US Immigration Services, and more. The types of transformations that are happening inside of these companies, and the stories that they are sharing, are inspiring. If you’re thinking about or have already started a DevOps transformation within your organizations, joining us at our second annual DevOps Enterprise Summit (DOES15, October 19-21 in San Francisco) is the best way to accelerate your efforts. We are putting together the program for 2015 now, and the lineup is packed full of great speakers from large organizations like Bank of America, Nordstrom, Verizon, ING, SalesForce, and Western Union. We are offering anyone involved in the DevOps community 10 off their tickets if they register using this link . Register quickly… we sold out early last year, and tickets are going fast!
On the next episode of Continuous Discussions:
Episode 23: Huge-Scale Deployments
Join us on August 11 to discuss some of the tools, best practices and patterns for successfully deploying to 1,000’s of servers around the world.
