Earlier today, I was joined by Eveline Oehrlich (Independent Research Director) and Jayne Groll (Co-founder, and CEO) of the DevOps Institute for a webinar to discuss the incredible findings from the inaugural Upskilling: Enterprise DevOps Skills Survey, of which CloudBees was proud to be the Founding Platinum Sponsor. These data sets present a pathway for identifying the talent gaps for enterprise IT, and give a greater focus to the “human” side of DevOps - something we are very passionate about here at CloudBees. You can download the full report here: hubs.ly/H0gJb1B0 . The key findings centered on the skill categories that were considered the most essential to DevOps in the enterprise, and to help individuals and organizations groom or hire key skills for the future. After the webinar, we sat down with Jayne to ask her to talk to us about the goals for the research.

Q: Jayne, how are you seeing the DevOps market, and its foundational skills, evolving?

Jayne: “As the focus within the enterprise DevOps community shifts from “What is DevOps?” to “How do we do DevOps,” the competition for skilled talent has become fierce. After all, “how to” requires “know-how.” And “know-how” requires a new set of skills. But, which skills? While there is a lot of emphasis on hiring or grooming T-shaped IT professionals—where the stem of the T represents an individual’s core competency, and the top of the T represents a broad range of related knowledge—there has been little clarity on which skills are the most important across a wide spectrum of possibilities.

Q: Is this why you decided to field this survey?

Jayne: Yes, exactly. We wanted to find out from the community which skills they considered most critical to cultural and digital transformation. After all, culture doesn’t transform, people transform when inspired to do so. Partnering with Eveline Oehrlich, a veteran research analyst, this very detailed survey received more than 1600 responses from individuals across verticals, organizational size, geographies and roles. We intend to make this a year-over-year event to provide the community with current skilling trends. We hope this data will help shrink the skills gap and support the transformational goals of both individuals and organizations.

Q: Can you share with folks why they might want to watch the webinar, or read the survey results?

Jayne: Simple. If you're either looking to hire, or looking to be hired, the benchmark data we collected provides good indications of which functional, process, technical and automation skills are “must-have,” “nice to have,” and “don’t care.” This is particularly significant for IT professionals who are confused about where to focus their personal skills transformations in their journey towards the “T.” Should developers work on upskilling their testing, automation, process and/or security skills? Should operations professionals learn to code, test or explore more about machine learning and AI? What about project management and systems administration? The Upskilling: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report can be used as a snapshot of critical enterprise skills that are important to successful digital transformation.
