DEV@cloud FAQ

Q: I already have my code hosted somewhere else. Can I still use CloudBees JaaS (Jenkins as a Service)?

A: Yes. If your code is hosted on a SVN or GIT repository available from the Internet, CloudBees JaaS will fetch the code from its existing location and will only run builds and tests at CloudBees. Of course, your code repositories will typically be accessed over SSL and authenticated using a username and password.

Q: Is CloudBees secure? Can I really host my code there?

A: Yes. CloudBees take data security very seriously. Our multi-tenant sub-systems make sure no information is shared among tenants.

Q: With CloudBees JaaS, I get elastic/on-demand Jenkins build agents, but do I have to pay for a Jenkins master?

A: No. You get a dedicated Jenkins master and other services as part of the monthly subscription fee.

Q: Can I install Jenkins plugins on my master instance?

A: Some, yes. We only allow CloudBees certified plugins to be installed on CloudBees JaaS. We want to make sure those plugins are i) secure, ii) stable and iii) properly integrated with CloudBees infrastructure. If you feel a plugin is missing, simply create a new request for enhancement (RFE).

Q: I am running an Open Source project, can I get a free account?

A: Yes, please look at our FOSS program.

Q: How do I know how much my team is spending?

A: Our billing system tells you in real-time how much build time has been spent to date.

Q: Can I set a maximum spending limit?

A: Yes. You can either pre-pay for some build packages and we will warn you when you are about to run out of credit or, if you prefer to pay at the end of the month, you can set your maximum limits. Once this limit is reached we can either warn you by e-mail or, optionally, block any further build until you increase your limit.

Q: Can I really use any number of concurrent build agents?

A: In most cases, yes. However, we have put in place some safety limits to prevent resource abuse. If a safety limit is preventing you from properly doing your job, please open a support ticket so we can work with you on improving the situation.

Q: I've started a new job and it took some time for it to run, why is that?

A: Our build agent provisioning algorithm allow for some flexibility when allocating a build agent to your master in order to optimize resources. While most of the time your build agent should be available in seconds, in very rare cases it might take up to ~3 minutes for it to show up.

Q: Will you provide a build agent VM with support for X/Y/Z?

A: If this is a generic-enough need, CloudBees will be happy to discuss this with you. In order to provide a pay-by-the-minute JaaS, we need to make sure VMs are sufficiently generic to be useful to multiple customers.
